Internationally renowned porn star Robert van Damme was arrested by local authorities May 21 in Orange County on charges of domestic violence and contempt of court. Damme, whose real name is Robert Kovarik, had his bond set at $100,000.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials say that the Czech Republic native has been hit with a federal detainer that prevents him from bonding out of state prison. Even if he were to post bail, he would be held in federal custody and brought before a U.S. magistrate judge.

A Federal immigration official told XBIZ that a Immigration detainer means federal officials believe the suspect doesn’t have the legal basis to be in the U.S. and once the local case against him ends, Damme will be transferred to the local federal facility at which point he will be processed for deportation or extradition.

Van Damme has performed for Falcon and Mustang Studios, but now runs RVD Films.

A new category has been added to the 2010 GAYVN Awards slate: Personality of the Year. The award will recognize the zaniest, sexiest, most-over-the-top non-sex personalities who operate in and around the realm of gay adult entertainment.

Personality of the Year will be the first award in the 12-year history of the “Oscars of gay adult entertainment” to be presented based on fan input.

According to Janet Gibson, chief operating officer for GAYVN parent company AVN Media Network, the selection committee will consider nominations from any personality or other industry insider through the pre-nominations website. (Email prenom@gayvn.com for a username and password if you don’t already have one.) Any industry denizen may be nominated for his or her non-sexually-explicit role. Bloggers, photographers, agents, casting directors, stage-show hosts, feature dancers, go-go boys and others are eligible—including porn stars, if they also perform in non-sexually-explicit capacities.

The top three nominees will be required to appear onstage during the gala awards ceremony, scheduled to take place Sept. 24 at San Francisco’s historic Castro Theatre in conjunction with the annual Folsom Street Fair.

Following the final performance from the nominees, all audience members will be asked to vote for the winner, who will receive his or her award that night.

“We want to encourage all personalities to submit a pre-nomination,” Gibson said. “This is an exciting departure for the GAYVN Awards, and we hope to make Personality of the Year an annual title. We’re looking forward to seeing who’s really popular with the fans, and I’m sure there will be some wild and wacky nominees and performances.”

The deadline for submitting Personality of the Year nominations is the same as for all other GAYVN Awards pre-nominations: June 15.

In order to be considered for a 2010 award, a production must have been released between Jan. 1, 2009, and May 31, 2010. Newcomers, studio marketing campaigns and web-based promotions and marketing efforts must have debuted during the same period.

Studios and individuals may email prenom@gayvn.com for a username, password and link to the submissions page. Industry insiders may nominate as many titles, people and companies as they desire in any category; however, participants are encouraged to nominate only their best efforts.

The poster image for the 2010 Folsom Street Fair was inspired by recent police raids of gay bars in Fort Worth, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia. The official poster also derived inspiration from the movie The Usual Suspects, the 1995 crime capper directed by openly gay filmmaker Brian Singer.

The organizers of the annual fetish fair, Folsom Street Events, said due to the outrage sparked within the LGBT community by the raids at the Atlanta Eagle and The Rainbow Lounge in Texas they decided to use the poster’s artwork as a way to highlight  issues of crime and punishment in the community.
In a statement released on Mother’s Day announcing the poster design, Folsom Street Events said the image, which features a line up of people in various drag, leather and fetish wear, juxtaposes crimes on Wall Street, such as the Goldman Sachs scandal, against behaviors in the BDSM community which may be punishable in some states and cities. Only recently did the Oakland City Council move to end a ban against cross-dressing that has been on the East Bay city’s books since the 1800s.

“This year’s Folsom Street Fair poster is intended to draw attention to the ongoing discrimination and persecution facing consenting adults who practice BDSM,” stated Demetri Moshoyannis, the organization’s executive director. “We are extremely pleased with the outcome of this poster because it maintains the tradition of our trademark cutting-edge commentary on our community within the broader society. We are very much looking forward to producing a fantastic series of internationally renowned events this year.”
